Arne Slot’s Liverpool side may be focused on defending their Premier League crown after splashing the cash on stars like Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Hugo Ekitike, but concerns are rising among fans that one of their summer departures could come back to haunt them.
The Reds began the season in style with a 4-2 win over Bournemouth, and their new signings have added strength to an already formidable squad. However, their busy summer also saw several players leave Anfield — including 22-year-old midfielder Tyler Morton.
Liverpool Supporters Fear Letting Morton Go May Prove Costly
Slot appeared unconvinced that Morton had a future at Liverpool, prompting the youngster’s £15 million move to French side Olympique Lyonnais, now managed by Paulo Fonseca.
A product of Liverpool’s academy and a 13-cap England U21 international, Morton had loan spells at Blackburn Rovers and Hull City to gain first-team experience. Despite showing promise, he only made 14 senior appearances for the Reds and was never truly given an extended opportunity to break into the first team.
Now at Lyon, the defensive midfielder is making a strong impression. He made his Ligue 1 debut in a 1-0 win over Lens on August 16, followed by a standout performance against FC Metz a week later. In that match, Morton registered 84 touches, three passes into the final third, and won all four of his ground duels.
He was named Man of the Match by Lyon fans and looks to have settled quickly into life in France. His early success has led to speculation that he could soon catch the eye of England manager Thomas Tuchel.
After the Metz game, Morton addressed Lyon supporters, saying: “Hi Olympique Lyonnais fans, I’m so grateful for being selected as Man of the Match. I’m very grateful for your welcoming and I can’t wait for the season. I’ll see you soon!”
His strong start has triggered concern among Liverpool supporters, some of whom worry the club may have been too quick to sell. One fan wrote, “Really hope we have a buy-back clause,” while another added, “We will regret this one…”
With no clear No.6 in Slot’s current squad, many fans feel Morton could have gradually earned a role as the team’s defensive midfielder. One supporter shared: “We should have included a buyback clause. I don’t understand why we didn’t, but he deserved a chance. With no number 6 in the team, he could have slowly gotten a chance. I don’t understand why we sold him so quickly.”
Puzzled by the decision to part ways with a promising talent, another fan wrote on social media: “I don’t understand why we sold him.”
