Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has spoken directly to fans, offering reassurance regarding the possible transfer of Alexander Isak to Liverpool.
With just a week remaining in the summer transfer window, speculation continues to swirl around Isak’s future, linking him with a move to Premier League champions Liverpool — a transfer reportedly seen as ideal by both Isak and Liverpool boss Arne Slot.
Despite mounting rumours, Newcastle have remained firm, stating that Isak would only be sold for a record-breaking fee and only if the club secures two new strikers to replace both him and Callum Wilson.
As Liverpool prepare to visit St James’ Park on Monday for a Premier League showdown, tensions are rising, especially after Isak reportedly refused to train with the squad and posted a strong message on social media in an apparent effort to push through the transfer.
In response, Howe made a promise to Newcastle supporters, saying that Isak will not be allowed to leave unless the club brings in a replacement. Asked whether Isak could be sold without a new striker coming in, Howe responded:
“I don’t think the club will let that happen. We simply can’t go through the season without a recognised striker — and I mean no disrespect to Will Osula. He’s progressing well, but he lacks Premier League experience.”
Although Osula joined from Sheffield United last year, he is yet to start a league match for Newcastle. In their recent goalless draw against Aston Villa, winger Anthony Gordon was used as a makeshift striker — a situation Howe is reluctant to repeat long-term.
“Anthony can play across the front line, including centrally, but he can’t replace Alex — and even he knows that,” Howe added.
With the transfer deadline approaching on September 1, Newcastle are in a race against time to bring in a forward. Brentford’s Yoane Wissa and Wolves’ Jorgen Strand-Larsen are currently among the top names linked with a move to Tyneside.
