Arne Slot has spoken out about Federico Chiesa’s future after the winger scored a key goal for Liverpool in their dramatic 4-2 win over Bournemouth in the Premier League opener on Friday.
Chiesa, who came off the bench to replace Florian Wirtz, restored Liverpool’s lead with just minutes left, and fans took notice of his celebration. Despite ongoing speculation about his future at the club, the Italian international featured in the match and played a crucial role.
The 27-year-old continues to be linked with a move away from Anfield, with AC Milan reportedly ramping up efforts to bring him back to Serie A before the transfer window closes. According to Football Italia, the Italian side is in discussions with Chiesa’s agent, and manager Max Allegri—who previously coached Chiesa at Juventus—is eager to reunite with him.
After the match, Slot addressed both Chiesa’s goal and the speculation surrounding his future. He hinted that Chiesa still has a place at Liverpool, saying:
“As long as he’s here, he’s a Liverpool player, and I have no reason to believe that will change.”
Slot also mentioned the challenges Chiesa faced last season with fitness issues and missing the club’s Asian tour, which influenced his substitutions during the match.
“At 2-2, we needed a number nine. I brought him on, and he delivered — that’s always a good sign for your future at the club,” he added.
Slot acknowledged the strong support Chiesa has received from fans, suggesting that his move from Italy to England and his performances may have earned their admiration.
“The fans sang for him a lot last season. Maybe it’s the story, maybe it’s just a catchy song — but I probably don’t give him the credit he truly deserves,” he admitted.
