Liverpool might have received a major boost in their attempt to sign Newcastle United star Alexander Isak just days before the new Premier League season kicks off.
With the 2025/26 Premier League season about to begin—starting with a match between reigning champions Liverpool and Bournemouth—transfer negotiations are still ongoing.
The most prominent transfer story involves Newcastle striker Isak, who has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool throughout the summer.
Even though Liverpool already signed Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike earlier in the window, they are reportedly very keen on bringing in the Swedish striker, who is currently on strike to push for the transfer.
Now, a fresh report brings positive news for Liverpool regarding the Isak saga.
Since the transfer window opened, Newcastle have insisted they won’t sell Isak unless they secure a replacement first.
Several forwards, such as Joao Pedro and Benjamin Sesko, have been linked with the Magpies this summer, but Newcastle have yet to finalize a new signing up front.
However, according to several Portuguese media sources, this stance may be shifting as Newcastle reportedly prepare to increase their interest in FC Porto’s Samu Aghehowa.
O Jogo recently reported that although Newcastle are interested, they have not yet formally approached the 21-year-old, who scored twice in Porto’s league opener against Vitoria Guimaraes last weekend.
But this doesn’t rule out the deal, as Jornal de Notícias says Newcastle remain persistent after sending a scout to watch Aghehowa’s performance.
The report adds that Newcastle are prepared to offer around €60-65 million (£51.7m-£56m) plus bonuses, but it’s unclear if this will meet Porto’s demands given the striker’s €100 million (£86.2m) release clause.
However, there is a potential setback, as some reports suggest Newcastle’s ongoing struggle to secure their striker targets might continue due to Aghehowa’s conduct during the match.
Right after scoring, Aghehowa pointed at Porto’s badge and appeared to say “I’m staying,” which could be a major disappointment for Newcastle and, consequently, for Liverpool.
