Manchester City are finalising their summer transfer strategy, and Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak could play a pivotal role in how things unfold.
The Swedish striker is currently a top target for Liverpool, though it’s likely that several Premier League rivals are hoping a move to Anfield doesn’t materialise.
Having won the league comfortably last season, Liverpool would be strong favourites to retain the title if they manage to secure a top-class striker like Isak.
However, there’s a twist — both Liverpool and Manchester City are reportedly interested in Real Madrid forward Rodrygo Goes.
This potential bidding war could limit Liverpool’s ability to pursue Isak. If City push hard for Rodrygo, Liverpool may be forced to shift focus and intensify their interest in him instead, possibly leaving Isak open for City or another club — especially since it’s unlikely Liverpool could afford to sign both players.
Additionally, Liverpool manager Arne Slot has already added Hugo Ekitike to the squad this summer, which may reduce the urgency of bringing in both Isak and Rodrygo.
City might benefit from tactically influencing Liverpool’s transfer decisions. If Liverpool do land Isak, they’ll be incredibly difficult to stop in the 2025/26 title race. On the flip side, if City manage to sign Rodrygo, they’ll significantly strengthen a squad that underperformed last season.
