Liverpool supporters quickly noticed Virgil van Dijk’s reaction when Arne Slot shook hands with Crystal Palace captain and rumored Liverpool target Marc Guehi before the Community Shield match.
The Premier League champions faced FA Cup winners Crystal Palace at Wembley to kick off the season, featuring three of Liverpool’s new signings in the lineup.
Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong both scored, while Florian Wirtz provided an assist and new left-back Milos Kerkez impressed on his debut.
Although Liverpool may not have finished their transfer business — particularly with the Alexander Isak deal unlikely to happen — they remain linked with a move for England defender Guehi.
Liverpool recently allowed Jarell Quansah to join Bayer Leverkusen, but an injury to Joe Gomez has left the club a bit short at central defense.
Van Dijk’s usual partner is Ibrahima Konate, with Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo also able to fill in.
According to Mike McGrath from The Telegraph, Liverpool are favorites to sign Guehi, as his former club Chelsea look elsewhere, even after Levi Colwill’s ACL injury.
The Reds have been monitoring Guehi for some time; the 25-year-old’s contract expires next summer.
With Liverpool leading the race, Guehi received a handshake from Slot in the tunnel, which led to a telling expression from Van Dijk.
Fans on X (formerly Twitter) commented on the moment, with one saying, “Guehi to Liverpool is confirmed. Van Dijk’s reaction says it all,” and others noting how Van Dijk seemed aware of Slot’s intentions.
Guehi played well in the 2-2 draw but had to be substituted late due to injury. Frustrated, he sat on the pitch before being replaced by Justin Devenny, who later scored the winning penalty.
When asked if Liverpool might still add a defender before the transfer window closes, Slot told TNT Sports, “We have plenty of options there, but if a good opportunity arises, we won’t hesitate to act.”
