Liverpool fans took to social media to share their frustrations after Mohamed Salah struggled during the Reds’ FA Community Shield loss to Crystal Palace on Sunday.
The 2025-26 season opener was an exciting contest, with Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitike finding the net just four minutes in. Palace responded through Jean-Philippe Mateta, who calmly converted a penalty in the 17th minute. Liverpool retook the lead shortly after thanks to a fortunate strike from Jeremie Frimpong.
Palace equalised again in the 77th minute with a goal from Ismaila Sarr, taking the match to a 2-2 draw. The Eagles eventually triumphed 3-2 in the penalty shootout.
Ahead of the game, much attention was on new signings Florian Wirtz and Ekitike, who both impressed. However, many Liverpool fans were disappointed with Salah’s display, as he appeared off the pace and largely uninvolved in the Wembley heat.
One supporter remarked: “Frimpong brings something new, but Salah’s effectiveness has clearly dropped since Trent left.”
Another commented: “Hughes and Edwards really need to find a fast winger—Salah’s lost a step, and Gakpo isn’t much quicker.”
A third fan suggested: “Liverpool will dominate the league, but Salah may not be as vital this season.”
Another said: “Salah supporters can’t blame Nunez and Diaz for his poor performances anymore.”
A fifth added: “He’s basically being used as a decoy for Frimpong’s runs now.”
Salah’s forgettable outing was capped by a yellow card for dragging back Eberechi Eze in the 86th minute, followed by a missed penalty in the shootout. Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott also failed to score from the spot.
StatMuse data highlighted his struggles: Salah didn’t create any big chances, completed no successful take-ons, accurate crosses, or duels. Now 33, he’s yet to register a goal or assist at Wembley since his debut there in 2017.
He’ll be looking to bounce back when Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign at Anfield against Bournemouth on Friday, August 15.
