Fabrizio Romano reported on Wednesday via X that a verbal agreement has been reached for Darwin Nunez’s transfer to Al-Hilal. Following this, Florian Plettenberg revealed that the Uruguay striker will earn a net annual salary of €15 million (£13.1 million) plus bonuses in Saudi Arabia.

Just days after Tyler Morton’s £15 million move to Lyon, Nunez is set to be the next player to leave the Premier League champions, ending his three-year spell at Liverpool.

On Wednesday evening, journalist Ben Jacobs shared an update on Nunez’s transfer to the Saudi Pro League, which is nearing completion.

He mentioned that the deal is close to being finalized at around €53 million (£46.3 million) plus add-ons. The 26-year-old is expected to visit the AXA Training Centre today to bid farewell to his teammates before flying to Germany for a medical.

Nunez’s time at Liverpool had its ups and downs
While it’s generous to call Nunez’s tenure at Liverpool a huge success, it’s unfair to label him a failure as some UK media have.

His finishing was inconsistent, and scoring only seven goals in 47 appearances last season was disappointing for a striker who initially cost £64 million after his 2022 move from Benfica. However, 40 goals in 143 appearances overall is not a poor record.

For comparison, Jack Grealish has managed just 17 goals in 157 games for Manchester City since his £100 million transfer from Aston Villa. Although Grealish plays as a winger, he is still an attacker for a top club in England and Europe.

Nunez will leave Liverpool with warm wishes from fans who valued his relentless work ethic, passionate celebrations—such as his famous run down the Wembley steps after the 2024 Carabao Cup final—and his knack for scoring late winners.
