Liverpool Fans React to Harvey Elliott’s Gesture in Athletic Bilbao Clash
Liverpool supporters have taken to social media after noticing something one player did during their pre-season matches against Athletic Bilbao.
On Monday, the Reds played two friendlies at Anfield against the La Liga side. The first match ended in a 4-1 win for Liverpool, with goals coming from Rio Ngumoha, Darwin Núñez, Harvey Elliott, and an own goal by Alex Padilla. Bilbao’s Gorka Guruzeta grabbed a consolation goal.
In the second game, Arne Slot’s men secured a 3-2 victory, with Cody Gakpo scoring twice and Mohamed Salah adding a third.
Liverpool are set to begin their 2025/26 season this weekend at Wembley, where they’ll face Crystal Palace in the FA Community Shield final. Their Premier League campaign will then kick off at Anfield against Bournemouth.
However, much of the post-match attention focused on Harvey Elliott. After the first game, fans spotted the young midfielder applauding every stand and blowing a kiss to The Kop — a gesture many interpreted as a potential farewell.
One fan wrote online: “Harvey Elliott applauded each stand and blew a kiss to The Kop. If that’s the last time… good luck, fella.” Another commented: “Hope he scores big elsewhere.”
More reactions followed, with one supporter saying: “Yeah, he’s leaving, I reckon,” while another noted: “You could see it in his face — he loves the club, but he needs to play every week.”
A fan added: “In another Liverpool side, he’d be starting every game. It’s a shame there are players ahead of him who won’t be dropped.” Another simply said: “Love Harv – sad day, but we shouldn’t hold him back. Keep the door open.”
Elliott, a lifelong Liverpool fan and fan favourite, has previously expressed his desire to stay at Anfield long-term. Last month, the 22-year-old stated: “If I had it my way, I’d be here for the rest of my career. I love everything about the club.”
However, he also admitted that he needs to consider his own ambitions, saying: “At the same time, I need to be selfish and do what’s best for me. I have big goals — I want to make the World Cup squad and continue progressing. I need to review the situation and talk things through.”
Elliott has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs this summer, including Brighton, West Ham, Newcastle, Wolves, and Tottenham.
