How Manchester United Might Jeopardize Liverpool’s Bid to Sign Alexander Isak

Liverpool’s planned move for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak could face serious complications due to competition from one of their biggest rivals, Manchester United. Despite having already spent nearly £270 million this summer, the Premier League champions are still keen on adding another high-profile forward, targeting the Swedish international.

Isak has shown interest in exploring new opportunities following Liverpool’s pursuit, and Newcastle have considered Yoane Wissa from Brentford as a possible replacement. However, their primary target appears to be RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, with the Magpies reportedly having approached the player.

The involvement of Manchester United, however, threatens to disrupt all potential deals—including Isak’s transfer.

Florian Plettenberg, a Sky Sports Germany journalist, revealed that both Manchester United and Newcastle are in talks with Sesko’s representatives. Writing on X, Plettenberg said:

“Manchester United and Newcastle are currently in discussions with Benjamin Sesko’s management. Both clubs have presented their projects and financial offers. The final decision rests with the player and his camp. Formal offers will likely be submitted to RB Leipzig after the verbal agreement, but Newcastle are pushing hard.”

Laurie Whitwell of the Manchester Evening News later added that United’s striker search has been narrowed down to Sesko and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins. While Sesko is seen as having higher potential, Watkins’ Premier League experience fits United’s transfer approach this summer.

Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson was reportedly ruled out due to the Blues’ steep demands.

If RB Leipzig’s coach Ruben Amorim opts for Sesko as his key forward, it could completely derail Isak’s potential move to Liverpool. Newcastle have struggled in the transfer market, with manager Eddie Howe lamenting the limited activity so far; Anthony Elanga is the club’s only major signing to date. Without securing a forward replacement, Newcastle might be forced to keep Isak.
