Manchester United could hinder Liverpool’s pursuit of Alexander Isak — here’s why.
Alexander Isak has expressed a desire to explore new opportunities this summer, informing Newcastle United of his intentions. As a result, he has been left out of Eddie Howe’s pre-season squad traveling to Singapore.
When asked about Isak’s status, manager Eddie Howe acknowledged on Sunday that there are internal discussions happening:
“Of course, there are conversations going on behind the scenes. Any dialogue between us and Alex, or between Alex and the club, will remain private. He’s very well-liked in the squad, and we’d love him to stay and continue his journey here. We’re not in contract talks at the moment — that may come later.”
“I truly hope he remains with us. But in football, the future is always uncertain.”
Isak still has three years remaining on his deal, and according to Sky Sports, Newcastle have placed a valuation of around £150 million on him. Despite having already signed Hugo Ekitike earlier in the window, Liverpool are reportedly interested in bringing Isak to Anfield.
However, Liverpool’s chances could be compromised if Newcastle struggle to find a suitable replacement.
One of their targets is RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, but the Slovenian striker is also on Manchester United’s radar.
Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg posted on X:
“Manchester United and Newcastle are currently in discussions with Sesko’s representatives. Both clubs have presented their offers and project plans. It’s now up to the player and his camp to decide. Formal offers are expected to follow soon, with Newcastle making a strong push.”
If United succeed in signing Sesko before Newcastle, it could leave the Magpies reluctant to sell Isak without a viable replacement.
Despite the speculation, Howe insisted the club remains focused:
“We’re not distracted. I’ve dealt with player sales before — it’s part of football. Any decision must make sense for Newcastle. We’re in a good financial position and are committed to success.
“There’s no deadline — the right decision will be made with all the facts. Regardless of Alex’s situation, our goal is to strengthen the team and ensure a positive atmosphere and stability within the squad.”
