Journalist Craig Hope has shared a fresh update on the potential transfer of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool.
Isak has been a target for Liverpool throughout the summer, with reports suggesting Arne Slot’s team made initial inquiries about his availability earlier this month.
The situation escalated on Thursday when The Athletic reported that Isak had requested to leave Newcastle. This development came shortly after Liverpool confirmed the signing of striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt.
So far this summer, Liverpool have spent over £200 million, although some of that has been recouped through player sales — including Trent Alexander-Arnold’s £10 million move to Real Madrid.
On Sunday, BBC Sport revealed that Bayern Munich had agreed to pay £65.5 million for Liverpool winger Luis Diaz. That potential sale could free up funds for Liverpool to pursue Isak, though they may also need to sign a replacement for Diaz.
In an article for the Daily Mail, Craig Hope, a well-informed source on northeast football, reported that Newcastle are now preparing for an official bid from Liverpool for Isak. Despite not wanting to sell their top talent, the club’s leadership is reportedly divided on whether to entertain offers or reject them outright.
Isak, currently sidelined with a minor thigh injury, is not part of Newcastle’s pre-season tour in South Korea. The 25-year-old won’t feature at all during the camp, raising speculation that he may have already played his last game for the club.
Last season, Isak scored 23 goals in the Premier League — second only to Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah. Newcastle’s next top scorer, Harvey Barnes, managed just nine goals, highlighting how difficult it would be for Eddie Howe to replace Isak if he leaves.
