A football finance expert has weighed in on whether Liverpool can afford to sign Alexander Isak this summer, following the striker’s reported £130 million valuation. The Reds had a fantastic season under new manager Arne Slot, clinching their second-ever Premier League title. They’ve also been proactive in strengthening the squad, already bringing in Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, and Florian Wirtz.
Despite the high-profile departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid, Liverpool look poised to challenge again next season. Reports now indicate they have their sights set on Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak as a potential new addition.
The Swedish striker won’t come cheap, with a hefty price tag of £130 million. Considering Liverpool’s significant spending this summer, questions have been raised about whether they can realistically afford him.
Can Liverpool Afford Isak?
Finance expert Kieran Maguire addressed this in an interview with the BBC, explaining that despite the cost, Liverpool are still in a strong financial position under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). The club has already spent more than £170 million this summer, but due to relatively low spending in recent years, they remain well within the rules, which cap losses over a three-year period at £105 million.
“Liverpool are a very smart club financially,” said Maguire. “Among the traditional big six, they’ve spent the least over the past three years — only £325 million, including the signing of Wirtz. They still have a lot of flexibility left in their budget. Also, striker deals are often structured in instalments, allowing clubs to spread the cost over several seasons.”
Isak has been a standout performer since joining Newcastle in 2022, scoring 62 goals in 109 matches. With such impressive stats, it’s no surprise Liverpool are interested, though prying him away from St. James’ Park will be no small task.
Liverpool are also reportedly considering other striker options if a move for Isak doesn’t materialize, with a shortlist of alternatives already in place.
