A significant development has emerged in the Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike transfer saga involving Liverpool and Newcastle, potentially reshaping both clubs’ summer plans.
Earlier this week, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano revealed that Liverpool were preparing a record-breaking bid for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season and was seen as their top target. A deal would likely require a £120 million offer.
As uncertainty surrounded Isak’s future, Newcastle began considering Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike—ironically, also on Liverpool’s radar.
However, on Thursday morning, both Romano and David Ornstein reported that Newcastle had cooled their interest in Ekitike, effectively ending their pursuit.
According to Ornstein in The Athletic, the Magpies have now set their sights on Brentford forward Yoane Wissa and are expected to open talks with the Bees soon.
Wissa, who represents DR Congo, scored 19 goals in 35 appearances last season and previously attracted interest from Nottingham Forest.
This shift suggests Liverpool may no longer be actively chasing Isak, especially amid reports they’ve initiated discussions with Frankfurt about Ekitike—who, after a stellar 22-goal season, is now one of the most sought-after young strikers in Europe.
