Liverpool may consider a move for Real Madrid’s Rodrygo this summer — but only if one of their current forwards departs in the near future.
According to journalist Sacha Tavolieri on X, the Reds are closely monitoring the Brazilian winger’s situation in Madrid, where his playing time under new manager Xabi Alonso has become less consistent.
Rodrygo, 24, featured in 54 matches for Los Blancos last season, scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists. However, he started just one of six FIFA Club World Cup matches, suggesting his role under Alonso may be reduced moving forward.
Capable of playing across the front line — though usually on the right — Rodrygo could become available if Real Madrid decide to sell, amid interest from other top European clubs.
Liverpool’s pursuit is said to hinge on a potential departure, with Luis Díaz the most likely candidate to make way. Despite being a key player for Arne Slot last season, Díaz has attracted interest from both Barcelona and Saudi Arabian clubs.
While Slot values the 28-year-old, Cody Gakpo is reportedly preferred on the left, and with Liverpool still in search of a striker, Díaz’s importance could diminish — possibly paving the way for an exit.
Although The Athletic recently reported that Liverpool have no plans to sell Díaz, the club seems to be preparing a backup plan in case he does leave.
Rodrygo’s adaptability and productivity make him an attractive option, especially as Liverpool look to reshape their frontline and plan for the future beyond Mohamed Salah.
The club has already secured Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and are considering Jeremie Frimpong for the right flank. Coupled with ongoing links to Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, it’s clear that Liverpool are actively looking to reinforce their attack.
A move for Rodrygo remains a possibility — but only if certain transfer pieces fall into place.
