A surprising new report has revealed that Liverpool have received a significant boost in their chase for Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak.
Despite already breaking their transfer record by signing former Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz for £116 million and also bringing in Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, Liverpool’s activity in the transfer market appears far from over.
While a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi remains on the table, Newcastle striker Isak has reportedly been at the top of new manager Arne Slot’s wishlist this summer.
However, Liverpool face stiff competition, with Manchester United and Arsenal also actively seeking to strengthen their attacking options.
That said, United have suffered a setback, as Newcastle seem to have swooped in for their primary target—potentially playing into Liverpool’s hands.
At the start of the summer transfer window, several major European clubs were eyeing Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, with Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool all previously linked to the 23-year-old. More recently, Manchester United emerged as a strong contender to sign him.
Now, in a fresh twist, The Telegraph reports that Newcastle have reignited their interest in Ekitike. With four years left on his contract, Frankfurt are expected to demand a fee in the region of £85 million, meaning any club signing him would be making a major financial commitment.
Newcastle’s renewed push for Ekitike has sparked speculation that they might be preparing for Isak’s departure. However, the latest report indicates that, for now, Newcastle see Ekitike as a potential partner for Isak rather than a replacement.
This comes after the Magpies missed out on ex-Brighton striker Joao Pedro earlier this month, with the Brazilian choosing Chelsea instead. Newcastle are still keen to sign a second forward following Callum Wilson’s exit.
