Fabrizio Romano provided an update this morning regarding a possible contract extension at Liverpool.
In recent times, the club has developed a strong reputation for snapping up top young British talent, with players like Harvey Elliott and Ben Doak joining the Reds before turning 18.
One such addition was Rio Ngumoha, who arrived from Chelsea last year after successfully navigating the Premier League’s strict registration protocols.
Romano offers latest on Ngumoha contract talks
On Saturday morning, Romano posted on X that Liverpool are preparing to offer the promising winger – who turns 17 next month – a new long-term contract, with talks currently underway.
The Italian journalist wrote: “Liverpool are planning to advance for new deal talks with talented winger Rio Ngumoha. Discussions ongoing for 2008-born talent to sign new long-term contract.”
Liverpool clearly hold Ngumoha in high regard
At the time of his signing, Paul Gorst told The Redmen TV that the club believes Ngumoha is among the best players of his age and have great expectations for his future. Former Chelsea captain John Terry also praised him, stating: “This boy is and will be a top, top player.”
Ngumoha trained with Arne Slot’s first team several times last season and even made his senior debut in January, starting in an FA Cup third-round fixture against Accrington Stanley just four months after turning 16. He played 72 minutes in that match.
He could be involved in pre-season action with the senior squad, as Liverpool face Preston in their first summer friendly on Sunday, although he’ll likely continue developing with the under-21 team in the coming months.
Liverpool’s push to secure Ngumoha on a long-term deal reflects how highly the club values him and their desire to keep him amid possible interest from elsewhere.
Having made impressive progress over the past year, there’s every reason to believe he’ll continue on an upward trajectory over the next 12 months.
