Liverpool FC has retired the number 20 jersey to pay tribute to Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car accident in Spain on July 3, 2025, alongside his brother. This marks the first time in the club’s history that a squad number has been permanently withdrawn.

Jota, 28, was traveling back to the UK by ferry after a lung procedure that prevented air travel. After discussions with his family, Liverpool decided to retire his number throughout the club — including the men’s, women’s, and academy teams.

Michael Edwards, the club’s Football CEO, called it “a lasting tribute to someone truly special,” ensuring Jota’s memory endures within the club.
