Fabrizio Romano shares update on Orkun Kokcu amid Liverpool links
Fabrizio Romano has shared the latest on Benfica midfielder Orkun Kokcu, who has been attracting interest from Liverpool.
As previously reported by CaughtOffside, Kokcu is being monitored by several clubs and looks likely to leave Benfica this summer.
Sources revealed that Turkish clubs such as Besiktas, Galatasaray, and Fenerbahce are all interested in bringing him back to the Süper Lig. Liverpool have also been linked with the 24-year-old, who is reportedly open to a reunion with his former Feyenoord manager, Arne Slot.
Kokcu edging closer to Besiktas move?
Romano has now provided an update via X (formerly Twitter), indicating that Besiktas are making serious progress in their pursuit of Kokcu.
He wrote: “Orkun Kokcu has informed Benfica of his desire: he wants to join Besiktas. Negotiations starting between Besiktas and Benfica as clubs already discussed details of the move. Kokcu to Besiktas, getting closer.”
This development suggests Liverpool may not have been strongly pushing for Kokcu’s signature after all.
Does Liverpool need Kokcu?
While Kokcu may admire Slot and vice versa, the Reds already have strong competition in midfield. It’s questionable whether the Turkish international would have broken into the first team ahead of players like Dominik Szoboszlai or Alexis Mac Allister.
Nonetheless, Kokcu remains a talented player, and it will be interesting to watch his progress. He may still have the potential to thrive in the Premier League later in his career.
