A truck driver who allegedly recorded the car crash that claimed the lives of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, is challenging assertions made in a recent police report.
Last week, the football community was left devastated by the news that Liverpool star Jota and his brother had died in a severe car crash.
The accident occurred in Zamora, Spain, with local authorities reporting that the two were traveling in a Lamborghini that veered off the road and caught fire, likely due to a tyre blowout.
Since the tragic incident, tributes have been pouring in from Liverpool teammates and figures across the football world.
On Tuesday, Spanish police released a report indicating that Jota was probably driving the car and that the vehicle might have been speeding when the tyre burst.
That investigation is reportedly still underway and yet to be finalized.
However, a truck driver who was on the same road at the time has cast doubt on the claim that the Lamborghini was exceeding the speed limit.
According to the Daily Mail, Jose Azevedo insisted the car was not speeding when the crash occurred.
“I filmed what happened, pulled over, and tried to help—but sadly, there was nothing I could do,” Azevedo said. “I have a clear conscience. I had no idea who was in the car at the time. My deepest sympathies to the family.
“They have my word the car wasn’t speeding. I could clearly see its make and color. I drive that road six days a week—I know it well, and it’s not a good road.”
He added: “It’s a dark road, but I could clearly see everything. Sadly, that’s how it ended.”
Meanwhile, Spanish outlet MARCA reported that another truck driver claimed to have been overtaken by Jota’s vehicle about five minutes before the crash and described its speed as “moderate.”
Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan recently expressed his sorrow over Jota’s death: “We’ve all been deeply shaken by what’s happened and are thinking constantly of the family.
“The messages, the flowers, the cards—all the emotion and support we’ve seen really show what ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ means.
“Right now, everyone wants to make sure we honor both boys’ memories and stand by their family. We’ll get through this together.”
