Liverpool star becomes ‘top priority’ as European giants prepare for fresh round of negotiations

Napoli are intensifying their efforts to sign Darwin Nunez, with the Uruguayan striker now viewed as their top transfer target, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Serie A side are prepared to part ways with Victor Osimhen this summer, with Galatasaray currently leading the race to secure the Nigerian forward’s signature.

Once Osimhen’s departure is confirmed—expected in the coming days—Napoli plan to fully focus on bringing in Nunez as their headline attacking acquisition for the new season.

Nunez is reportedly open to joining the Italian club and is said to be excited about the potential move to Naples.

The 26-year-old has made it clear that Napoli is his preferred destination, informing both Liverpool and his representatives that he is prioritizing a move to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Romano shared the update via X, stating:

“With Osimhen on the verge of leaving, Napoli are preparing for another round of talks for Darwin Nunez, who remains their dream signing. As previously reported two weeks ago, Darwin is keen on Napoli and open to the transfer. He is currently giving full priority to the move.”

Napoli’s head coach—who led the club to the Scudetto last season—is a known admirer of Nunez’s qualities.

Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Arne Slot is also looking to reshape his attacking lineup.

Nunez, who joined Liverpool from Benfica in a high-profile transfer, has endured a turbulent time at Anfield, drawing criticism for his inconsistency and lack of goals.

With Liverpool also in the market for attacking reinforcements, Napoli’s interest in Nunez could work in their favor.

Further negotiations between the two clubs are expected soon. However, Liverpool are only willing to approve Nunez’s sale if their asking price is met, allowing them to reinvest in key areas under Slot’s leadership.

One potential target for Liverpool is Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike, who is reportedly high on the club’s shortlist.
