Liverpool release statement after Diogo Jota, 28, dies in car crash alongside brother

Liverpool FC has officially confirmed the heartbreaking news that forward Diogo Jota and his brother Andre have died in a tragic car accident.

The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning in Zamora, a province in northwestern Spain, at approximately 1:30 a.m. Reports emerged that Jota, 28, and his brother were killed in the collision.

The tragedy comes just days after Jota married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso—the mother of his three children—in a ceremony held in Porto.

Following initial tributes from former players and fans, Liverpool released a formal statement:
“The club has been informed that the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain, along with his brother, Andre.
Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and asks that the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates, and club staff be respected as they process this unimaginable loss.
We will continue to offer them our full support.”

Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020, made 182 appearances, scoring 65 goals and helping the club secure the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup titles. A fan favorite, he was known for his impact on the pitch and his chant that regularly echoed around Anfield.

His former club, FC Porto, also mourned the loss:
