Diogo Jota’s final post on social media has come to light following the heartbreaking news of his death.
Reports from both Spain and Portugal confirm that the Liverpool forward tragically lost his life in a car accident early Thursday morning.
According to zamora24horas, the 28-year-old and his brother, Andre—who is also a footballer—were involved in a deadly crash in Zamora, located in the northwest of Spain.
Authorities quickly responded, including the Traffic Civil Guard, the Zamora Provincial Fire Department, and the Emergency Coordination Center for Health Services.
Medical teams were also dispatched, including a Medical Emergency Unit (UME) and doctors from the Mombuey Health Center.
An official statement said: “The 1-1-2 Castilla y León emergency center received multiple calls about a car accident at kilometer 65 of the A-52 highway, in the municipality of Cernadilla, Zamora. A vehicle was reportedly involved in a crash and caught fire. 1-1-2 alerted the Zamora Traffic Police and local emergency services.”
Jota’s death comes only weeks after his wedding.
He married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso, last month. The couple had been together since 2012 and share three children.
Jota proposed in July 2022, and they were married on June 22, 2025. They shared their wedding on Instagram with a joint post featuring a video captioned, “A day we will never forget.”
Jota transferred to Liverpool from Wolves in 2020. Over his time at the club, he netted 65 goals in 182 appearances and was part of the squad that won the Premier League title last season.
He also claimed the FA Cup and EFL Cup with Liverpool and secured two UEFA Nations League titles with Portugal.
