Liverpool could break their own newly set British transfer record again this summer—if a crucial contract situation at a Premier League rival turns in their favour.
According to Graeme Bailey via Rousing the Kop, Newcastle United are working hard to secure Alexander Isak on a new contract, but Liverpool’s recruitment team are closely monitoring the situation in case the Swedish striker decides not to commit.
“Isak has always been a potential target. I’m confident in my sources and what we’re hearing,” Bailey said.
Isak, 25, had an outstanding season with 27 goals for Newcastle, including the winner against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final, so it’s no surprise the Reds are paying close attention.
Bailey added, “Newcastle are ready to break their wage structure to keep him, but Liverpool are watching developments carefully—it’s reaching a critical stage.”
This isn’t the first time reports have suggested Newcastle are prepared to make exceptions to retain their star striker, underlining just how determined they are to hold onto him.
This will interest many Liverpool fans, especially with Darwin Nunez’s future uncertain and concerns about his standing with manager Arne Slot. A new top-class No.9 could be on the agenda.
After already setting a new British transfer record with the £116 million signing of Florian Wirtz, Bailey claims Liverpool might not be done yet.
“Liverpool have already broken the British record,” he noted. “An offer in the £120-130 million range could be enough to prise Isak away—but only if he turns down Newcastle’s new deal.”
He also mentioned that Liverpool are continuing to pursue other attacking targets this summer.
If Isak refuses Newcastle’s offer, it could open the door for a blockbuster move to Anfield—potentially another major signal of intent from Liverpool.
Signed by Newcastle for £63 million in 2022, Isak won’t come cheap. But his age, Premier League track record, and consistent goal scoring make him one of the few realistic signings who could significantly raise Liverpool’s attacking level.
Whether or not he pushes for a move could be the deciding factor—and Liverpool surely won’t be the only club watching those contract negotiations closely.
