Liverpool’s summer transfer spree shows no signs of slowing, but there’s a clear strategy behind the headline-grabbing moves.
According to Mirror Football, the club is closing in on a deal for Marc Guehi, who is expected to become their seventh signing of a busy window. This follows high-profile moves for Jeremie Frimpong, exciting young star Florian Wirtz, speedy left-back Milos Kerkez, and three goalkeepers: Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi, and Freddie Woodman.
Guehi’s arrival would push Liverpool’s total summer spending—add-ons included—towards £250 million. However, with squad gaps to address and revenue coming in from player sales, the club’s aggressive recruitment strategy makes sense.
Last summer, Arne Slot’s first in charge, Liverpool made just one notable signing: Federico Chiesa. Mamardashvili’s move was already agreed earlier. That cautious approach helped Slot evaluate his squad and steer the team to a dominant league title. But a year on, with changes needed, Liverpool are now taking action.
Frimpong has come in to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who joined Real Madrid. Kerkez addresses last season’s issues at left-back. Kelleher was sold to Brentford for £18m after Mamardashvili’s arrival, and further changes in the goalkeeping department prompted the club to sign Pecsi and Woodman, helping to meet homegrown requirements.
Wirtz was a signing Liverpool couldn’t pass up—both due to his talent and the club’s need for more output from attacking midfield. With Harvey Elliott and Darwin Nunez both possibly leaving, his importance increases.
Now attention turns to the center of defence. Jarell Quansah is set for a £35m move to Bayer Leverkusen after the U21 Euros final—a profit-rich deal in PSR terms, like those of Kelleher and Alexander-Arnold. Ibrahima Konate also has just a year left on his contract and is reportedly unhappy with renewal terms, with PSG and Real Madrid showing interest. A departure next summer is looking likely.
All this makes Liverpool’s pursuit of a new centre-back urgent, and Guehi appears to be the chosen target. While there are some concerns—particularly about his aerial ability—he brings leadership as an FA Cup-winning captain and regular England starter, and satisfies the homegrown player criteria.
Set to turn 25 soon and with just a year left on his contract, Guehi is ready for the next step—and few clubs right now are as exciting as Liverpool. After dominating on the pitch last season, the Reds are making just as much noise off it this summer.
