Liverpool Near Marc Guehi Deal as Ambitious Summer Spending Pushes On
Liverpool appear set to continue their aggressive summer recruitment drive by moving closer to securing a deal for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.
The 23-year-old centre-back, who has attracted interest from several top Premier League clubs amid uncertainty over his future at Selhurst Park, is now a top target for Liverpool. With just one year remaining on his current contract and no signs of a renewal, Liverpool are now reportedly in a strong position, with discussions expected to take place within the next 24 hours.
This potential acquisition would mark another major addition for the Premier League champions, who have already spent close to £200 million this summer. Their headline signings include Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record £116 million, Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth for £40 million, and Jeremie Frimpong—also from Leverkusen—for £30 million.
The spree has sent a clear message of intent from Liverpool and owners Fenway Sports Group, and beating out clubs like Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur for Guehi would be a significant win.
However, obstacles remain. Palace are thought to value Guehi at around £70 million but are also realistic about the market, given his contract expires in 12 months. They are likely to demand over £40 million, especially considering Chelsea’s 20% sell-on clause from the £18 million transfer in 2021.
Liverpool may also need to convince Guehi of regular first-team opportunities. Jarell Quansah is reportedly on his way to Bayer Leverkusen after limited minutes under new manager Arne Slot, whose preferred centre-back pairing has been Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté. Konaté’s own future is uncertain with just a year left on his deal.
Still, Guehi, who turns 25 soon and has 23 England caps, is viewed as a long-term asset—almost certain to be part of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for next year’s World Cup.
In addition to their marquee signings, Liverpool have also bolstered their goalkeeping options with the additions of Armin Pesci and Freddie Woodman. Georgian international Giorgi Mamardashvili, whose transfer from Valencia was arranged last year, will officially join the squad when pre-season begins on July 8.
If the Guehi deal is completed, it could mark the end of Liverpool’s summer transfer activity—despite ongoing links to Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
Meanwhile, Crystal Palace await a UEFA decision on whether they’ll play in the Europa League next season and are also bracing for interest in Eberechi Eze, who may become the subject of a bidding war between Arsenal and Tottenham.
