Liverpool have made another strategic summer move with the signing of Freddie Woodman — but it’s the surrounding context that makes the transfer particularly compelling.
The 28-year-old goalkeeper joins on a free after leaving Preston North End, where he racked up 138 appearances and was named Player of the Year for the 2022/23 season.

Intriguingly, Manchester United were reportedly considering a move for Woodman before deciding to extend the contract of 39-year-old Tom Heaton, as per The Lancashire Post. That decision highlights Liverpool’s forward-thinking recruitment strategy under Arne Slot, who is reshaping the squad to support Alisson and new backup keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.
There’s also a tactical advantage to the signing: Woodman qualifies as an “association-trained” player for UEFA competitions, having spent key developmental years in England. That means he won’t occupy one of Liverpool’s limited non-homegrown slots — a key factor as the club manages its European squad around high-profile signings like Florian Wirtz.
With Vitezslav Jaros loaned to Ajax and Harvey Davies joining Crawley Town, a third senior keeper was essential — and Woodman fits the need well. A U20 World Cup winner with England in 2017, he also brings an interesting personal background: he’s the godson of England manager Gareth Southgate and the son of Bromley boss Andy Woodman.
