Liverpool are reportedly stepping up their efforts to secure a new defensive leader, as Jarell Quansah nears a move to Bayer Leverkusen.
DaveOCKOP reports that the Reds are “closing in on a deal” for Marc Guehi, who has become a top priority to replace the Warrington-born centre-back. Initial talks with the England international’s representatives began earlier this year, and discussions are expected to progress quickly.
Guehi, currently captain at Crystal Palace, is entering the final year of his contract and is not looking to extend his stay in South London. That makes him a realistic and appealing homegrown option, especially given his proven track record for both club and country.
After leading Palace to their first-ever FA Cup victory and playing a key role in England’s journey to the Euro 2024 final, the ex-Chelsea defender is eager to maintain his place in the national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup. To do that, he’s seeking consistent playing time. Liverpool have made it clear from the outset that while opportunities will come, patience will be needed during the negotiation phase.
Guehi’s Premier League experience, leadership skills, and age make him a strong fit for Arne Slot’s plans in his second season. Meanwhile, Quansah, who only made one Premier League start post-title win, is set to join Leverkusen in a deal worth over €30 million including bonuses.
Slot has already proven he’s willing to make bold changes—even if that means moving on from academy products. Liverpool have also landed Florian Wirtz from Leverkusen this summer, and Quansah’s sale could help offset some of the cost.
If Guehi’s transfer is finalized for around £40–45 million, it would be considered good value, although Crystal Palace are expected to drive a hard bargain due to Chelsea’s 20% sell-on clause from his £18 million transfer in 2021.
Overall, Guehi’s profile as a seasoned yet still-developing defender could be crucial as Liverpool aim to defend their Premier League crown and compete in Europe. Paul Joyce has also confirmed the club’s interest, and with other key signings wrapped up, this move may accelerate quickly.
