Liverpool Unlikely to Join Race for Viktor Gyokeres Despite Reports

Despite claims from Portugal suggesting Liverpool are preparing to rival Arsenal and Manchester United for Viktor Gyokeres, the Reds are not planning to pursue the Sporting Lisbon striker.

The Swedish forward is expected to leave Sporting this summer, with multiple Premier League clubs reportedly interested. Arsenal and Manchester United have led the chase for the former Coventry City striker, while Liverpool have also been linked following a successful, title-winning season.

Liverpool, who recently broke the British transfer record with the signing of Florian Wirtz, are aiming to strengthen their attack. However, sources at TNT Sports indicate that Gyokeres is not part of their transfer plans. Instead, other forwards such as Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike have been associated with potential moves to Anfield.

Under new manager Arne Slot, Liverpool have already added Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong to the squad, with Milos Kerkez reportedly close to joining as well.

Gyokeres has delivered an outstanding scoring record during his time in Portugal, netting nearly 100 goals in two seasons, including over 50 last season. While he would be a major addition for any top side, Liverpool appear to be steering clear.

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s interest is thought to have intensified due to manager Ruben Amorim’s connection with Gyokeres from their time at Sporting. However, a major obstacle for United is their lack of Champions League football.

Arsenal, who initially prioritized RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško, may reconsider their options and turn to Gyokeres, especially if wage demands become a sticking point in the Šeško deal.

Sporting were reportedly open to selling Gyokeres for around £65 million — below his release clause — but negotiations have become strained. The striker has reportedly had disagreements with the club over a higher asking price. Club president Frederico Varandas has denied any prior agreement on the fee, stating: “I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for €60m plus €10m because I never promised that. To this day, Sporting has not received an offer for Gyokeres — neither this season nor last.”
