Liverpool could soon be in a position to strengthen their defense, following a key transfer by a Premier League rival.
According to Mark McAdam of Sky Sports News, Bournemouth’s £14.4 million acquisition of Adrien Truffert from Rennes is likely to clear the path for Milos Kerkez to make a move to Anfield. Talks between Liverpool and Bournemouth regarding the 21-year-old Hungarian left-back have reportedly taken place in recent weeks.
Kerkez, who made 41 appearances across all competitions last season and plays alongside Dominik Szoboszlai for Hungary, is being considered as a long-term successor to Andy Robertson.
McAdam explained, “Truffert’s move to Bournemouth is expected to pave the way for Kerkez to join Liverpool.” However, he also noted that no formal offer has been submitted yet. Sky Sports believes Bournemouth see Truffert as a direct replacement for Kerkez.
Kerkez still has three years left on his contract and is valued at around £45 million by Bournemouth.
Potential Changes at Liverpool
Kerkez’s arrival could bring more than just tactical changes. It may lead to a reshuffle within Liverpool’s dressing room.
Andy Robertson, who has been linked with a transfer to Atletico Madrid, might not be content with a secondary role at this stage in his career. Although Kostas Tsimikas has served well as a backup, a possible scenario could see Robertson leave while the Greek defender stays.
Such a move would certainly stir debate. Robertson, now 31, has been a vital part of Liverpool since joining in 2017, both as a player and a leader. His presence off the pitch has been as significant as his contributions on it.
Replacing Robertson’s leadership qualities could prove more challenging than filling his role on the field — even though Kerkez appears to be a dynamic and stylistically fitting successor.
Judging by social media activity from Kerkez and his family, signs point to him becoming Liverpool’s next first-choice left-back.
