The Premier League champions aren’t wasting time as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of next season’s title defence.
After securing their second Premier League title, Liverpool quickly moved to sign right-back Jeremie Frimpong, who is expected to provide Arne Slot with greater tactical options on the right following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s controversial departure.
With left-back Milos Kerkez also set to arrive from Bournemouth, Liverpool made a major statement in midfield by completing a record-breaking deal for German playmaker Florian Wirtz—potentially rising to £116 million with performance-based add-ons.
Typically, when a young German star helps prevent Bayern Munich from winning the Bundesliga—as Wirtz did under Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen in 2023–24—the next step is a move to Bayern.
While Bayern were reportedly interested in Wirtz, his decision to join Liverpool has forced the German giants to look elsewhere, even as they compete in the Club World Cup in the U.S.
According to Liverpool.com, Bayern have now shifted their focus to Anfield in hopes of landing a replacement target for Wirtz.
However, Bayern boss Vincent Kompany faces stiff competition from both Barcelona and Liverpool manager Arne Slot for Colombian winger Luis Diaz, who is now on Bayern’s radar along with Cody Gakpo.
Journalist Matt Addison reports that “Bayern Munich has supposedly added Luis Diaz to its list of options.”
Diaz has indicated he’s open to staying at Liverpool, provided a new contract agreement can be reached. His current deal expires in two years, and Slot is also said to be keen on keeping him at Anfield.
Bayern had also been eyeing Nico Williams, who’s headed to Barcelona, and Real Madrid’s Rodrygo, but those avenues have closed, prompting a pivot toward Liverpool, PSG’s Bradley Barcola, and Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Bynoe-Gittens.
With so many names on their shortlist, Bayern’s recruitment team will have little time to enjoy the Club World Cup campaign.
Kompany’s side opened the tournament with a 10–0 win over Auckland City and followed up with a narrow victory over Boca Juniors.
Their final group-stage match against Benfica will determine whether they finish first or second, though the Portuguese side must avoid defeat or rely on Auckland to limit Boca’s goal tally to advance.
