“Richard Hughes reveals position on Micky van de Ven amid Liverpool transfer rumours”

 

 

Micky van de Ven’s future has been a major talking point throughout this season.

The Dutch defender has been one of Tottenham Hotspur’s standout performers in recent years, with his impressive displays even earning him several call-ups to the Netherlands national team. However, Tottenham currently sit just one point above the relegation zone, raising the possibility that Igor Tudor’s side could drop down this season.

Despite still competing in the Champions League, their heavy 5-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday highlighted the gap in quality between Spurs and Diego Simeone’s team.

Because of this situation, Liverpool have been mentioned as a possible destination for Van de Ven. The Reds are looking to strengthen their defence, which has led to speculation linking the 24-year-old with a move to Anfield. Van de Ven also shares good connections with several players under Arne Slot, which has only added to the rumours.

At just 24, the Dutchman still has many of his best years ahead of him. Although he has shown a slightly aggressive side at times this season, it’s understandable given the pressure of Tottenham’s difficult campaign.

While centre-back is his natural position, Van de Ven has also played at left-back in the past. That versatility could be valuable for Liverpool, especially with Andy Robertson reportedly nearing the end of his time at the club.

However, with numerous players being linked to Liverpool, not every rumour proves accurate. According to journalist Dominic King, the Reds are not currently planning a move for Van de Ven.

Speaking to talkSPORT, King explained:

“From what I’ve heard, I don’t believe Liverpool are in for him. You can never completely rule anything out in football transfers because situations can change.

“I do think he would be interested in joining Liverpool, based on what I’ve heard. But at the moment, I’m not sure Liverpool feel the same way.”

Liverpool are clearly in need of defensive reinforcements. The team has struggled to meet its usual standards during the 2025–26 season, and failing to strengthen the back line could create even bigger problems next year.

That’s why defenders such as Nico Schlotterbeck and Van de Ven continue to be linked with the club.

Another concern is Virgil van Dijk’s contract situation, which runs until 2027. If the Dutch captain eventually departs, Liverpool would lose not only their best centre-back but also valuable experience and depth in defence.

There are still many decisions to be made before the summer transfer window opens. For now, Liverpool’s lack of interest in Van de Ven suggests they are not prioritising him as a target—unless Tottenham’s situation worsens and he becomes available for a significantly reduced fee.
