The Brazilian did not travel to Istanbul with Arne Slot’s squad for the round-of-16 first leg after experiencing discomfort during Monday’s training session.

According to Paul Joyce of The Times, the issue emerged following Liverpool’s final training session before departure. Joyce reported that Alisson complained of discomfort after the workout, leading to the decision for him to sit out the match.

Although the injury is believed to be minor, Liverpool’s medical staff chose a cautious approach by keeping the 33-year-old on Merseyside. However, his absence presents a challenge for Slot, given Alisson’s reputation for delivering crucial performances in big European away fixtures.

With Alisson unavailable, Giorgi Mamardashvili is expected to step in. The Georgian international, who joined Liverpool in the summer of 2025, is set to make his first appearance since the FA Cup win over Barnsley F.C. two months ago.

Mamardashvili is already familiar with the intense atmosphere at RAMS Park, having come on as a substitute for Alisson during Liverpool’s 1–0 defeat there in September. With 11 appearances this season, the 25-year-old will now be responsible for helping Liverpool secure a strong result to take back to Anfield.

This latest issue continues a frustrating pattern for Alisson. Despite being regarded as one of the world’s best goalkeepers, injuries have frequently disrupted his availability. He has already missed nine games this season, including a lengthy spell late in 2025 due to a hamstring problem.

Since 2019, the Brazilian has struggled with several muscle, hip, and calf injuries, forcing Liverpool to rely on backup goalkeepers more often than expected. While the signing of Mamardashvili was partly meant to secure the position for the future, the growing number of absences has raised concerns about Alisson’s long-term reliability at the club.
