“I’ve got a clear view…” – Jamie Carragher weighs in on Arne Slot’s future following Liverpool’s latest blow

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool’s leadership will continue to firmly back Arne Slot, despite the Reds suffering another disappointing setback on Sunday. After taking the lead through Dominik Szoboszlai’s brilliant free-kick, Liverpool lost 2-1 at home to Manchester City, conceding a stoppage-time goal for the sixth time this season and remaining five points outside the Champions League spots.

Slot’s position has faced scrutiny, with Jamie O’Hara recently suggesting that failing to qualify for Europe’s elite competition could make the 47-year-old’s job untenable. However, Carragher feels Slot still has the hierarchy’s support, pointing to a recent roundtable discussion shared by the club as evidence the Dutch manager isn’t at risk of being dismissed.

“There was a roundtable a few days ago with Billy Hogan, Arne Slot, and Richard Hughes,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “They discussed the issues this season, and I think fans saw that as a statement from the club: ‘Stop questioning the manager. He’s our man and he’s staying.’ That’s fine – it doesn’t matter what we say. I see the manager staying regardless. Only an early exit from the FA Cup or Champions League might change that, but everything points to them backing their man.”

Carragher highlighted that Liverpool still have plenty to play for this season. While recent months have been difficult, there’s still potential for a strong finish. Winning any trophy would be a major achievement, especially a Champions League triumph, which would be remembered far more than domestic struggles – just as the 2004/05 season is remembered for Istanbul rather than league results.

In the Premier League, fifth place could still secure European football next season. Liverpool are currently four points off that mark with 13 games remaining – challenging, but not impossible.

That said, the hierarchy’s view of Slot could shift if the Reds fail to reach the Champions League, particularly given their status as defending domestic champions and early favorites. While it seems unlikely Slot will be dismissed before May, both he and the club can’t afford to fall further behind domestically, or difficult conversations could start behind the scenes at Anfield.
