‘Such huge potential’ – Lewis Koumas takes just four minutes to become an instant Hull City hero

 

 

Lewis Koumas wasted no time announcing himself to Hull City fans on Saturday, becoming an instant favourite just minutes after stepping onto the pitch.

The 20-year-old had only completed his loan move from Liverpool the day before—after being recalled from Birmingham earlier in the week—and was named on the bench by Sergej Jakirovic for the Championship trip to Blackburn. With the game still goalless in the 77th minute, Koumas was introduced, and his influence was felt almost immediately.

Just four minutes later, with 81 minutes on the clock at Ewood Park, Kyle Joseph slipped a first-time pass into Koumas’ path. One touch to set himself was all he needed before firing a precise finish past Balazs Toth.

The victory lifted Hull into third place in the Championship, five points adrift of leaders Coventry and Middlesbrough, with a game in hand on both.

After the match, Jakirovic was full of praise for the young forward, telling News Shopper: “As soon as we had the chance to sign him, I said we had to do it. He’s very young, has huge potential and already has plenty of experience at this level. I really believe he can help us a lot.”

It’s been a remarkable turnaround for Koumas in the space of a week. After publicly voicing his frustration over limited minutes at Birmingham—where he managed just one goal in 25 appearances, mostly from the bench—he has already matched that tally in just 13 minutes of action for Hull.

The key now will be consistency, ensuring his debut strike is more than just a momentary spark. Still, he could hardly have asked for a better beginning to his latest loan spell from Liverpool.

With back-to-back home fixtures against Watford and Bristol City coming up, Koumas has the perfect chance to build momentum and continue making a strong impression under Jakirovic at the MKM Stadium.
