A surprise move for Curtis Jones sent shockwaves on Friday night, but the reality behind it is now becoming clearer.

Things briefly descended into chaos when Fabrizio Romano revealed that Inter Milan had submitted an approach for Jones. The proposal was a loan deal with an option to buy, with direct talks taking place between the two clubs. Romano reported that discussions were ongoing, sparking instant disbelief among Liverpool supporters.

On the surface, the deal never really added up. Liverpool are already stretched thin, with injuries hitting a squad that was hardly large to begin with. Jones remains one of the few players capable of covering multiple roles and is also among the limited number of homegrown options left after last summer’s clear-out. Allowing him to leave mid-season would be baffling — doing so on loan would border on the absurd.

That panic has since eased. Paul Joyce has stated in The Times that Liverpool have no intention of approving the exit of any senior players before the window shuts. He also notes that Inter were fully aware the bid was ambitious, but decided it was worth testing Liverpool’s resolve.

For now, the threat of Jones leaving has disappeared. But the episode raises some interesting questions. The strong rejection of the deal appears to be less about Jones himself and more about Liverpool’s current lack of depth. In short, they simply cannot afford to lose bodies at this stage.

With just 16 months remaining on his contract, however, the situation looks very different beyond this season. A summer departure suddenly feels very realistic, with Inter likely to return — possibly on more favourable terms for themselves.

There’s also the matter of why Inter felt encouraged to make such a move in the first place. It suggests there may have been positive signals from somewhere, whether from the player’s camp or within Liverpool, as the bid otherwise seems strangely timed.

So while Jones is staying put for now, the bigger picture is hard to ignore. The groundwork appears to have been laid, and all signs now point toward an exit once the summer window opens.
