Liverpool ‘Open Talks’ Over Potential Deadline-Day Signing After Frimpong Injury
Liverpool are weighing up a move for one of Europe’s standout full-backs after reports from Italy revealed the club have already made initial checks on his availability.
Arne Slot recently confirmed that Jeremie Frimpong will be sidelined for “a few weeks” after suffering an early injury in Liverpool’s Champions League win over Qarabag. The Dutchman, who arrived from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, was forced off just minutes into the game and will not be involved this weekend.
With Frimpong out, Liverpool currently have no recognised right-back options available for Saturday’s clash with Newcastle. Conor Bradley has been ruled out for the remainder of the season, while Joe Gomez will miss the match after being substituted against Bournemouth last week.
The situation has left Slot short of defensive options, prompting speculation that the Reds could make a late move in the transfer market. According to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Liverpool have made inquiries about Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries following Frimpong’s injury.
Di Marzio reports that any potential deal will depend on Frimpong’s recovery timeline and Inter’s stance, with the Italian club already sounding out alternatives. Inter are believed to be close to signing Brooke Norton-Cuffy from Genoa, with Fabrizio Romano claiming talks are at an advanced stage.
Meanwhile, Nicolò Schira has suggested Liverpool have also held discussions with Dumfries’ representatives to assess the conditions of a possible transfer, with Inter said to be asking for around €25 million.
The 29-year-old Netherlands international has had limited minutes this season due to injury, but his quality remains widely recognised. Former England striker Alan Shearer previously backed Dumfries as a strong fit for Liverpool, highlighting his attacking output and energy.
Speaking last summer, Shearer praised Dumfries’ impact going forward, noting his goals and assists in big matches, while acknowledging that his defensive game can divide opinion. He also pointed out that Slot, as a fellow Dutchman, would know the player well.
Despite Liverpool’s interest, Dumfries remains in a strong position at Inter, where he is competing for major honours. The Nerazzurri narrowly missed out on last season’s Serie A title and went on to lose the Champions League final to Paris Saint-Germain.
