Tottenham are prepared to intensify their pursuit of an “exceptional” Liverpool player as they look to solve a major problem in their squad.

 

 

Tottenham are said to be keeping a close eye on Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, with reports claiming the interest has been ongoing for some time, although no official contact has been made with Anfield chiefs yet.

Spurs have admired the 24-year-old for several years due to his technical ability, flexibility across midfield and creative qualities. That said, Liverpool — along with head coach Arne Slot — consider Jones an important figure in their long-term plans, which would make any move extremely unlikely.

A lifelong Liverpool fan, Jones has previously made it clear that he dreams of emulating his hero Steven Gerrard by spending his entire career at Anfield. Having risen through the academy to become a consistent first-team option, he is regarded as one of the club’s most prized homegrown talents. Former Reds boss Jürgen Klopp has also previously labelled him an “exceptional” player.

Despite adding Conor Gallagher from Atlético Madrid earlier in the January window, Tottenham’s midfield problems have not gone away. A string of injuries has highlighted a lack of depth in Ange Postecoglou’s squad, prompting the club to look at further options.

João Palhinha is the latest concern after picking up an injury that could sideline him for several weeks, while Rodrigo Bentancur is also facing a lengthy absence. These setbacks have left Spurs short in central midfield and increased their search for a player who can provide creativity, ball progression and a goal threat — qualities Jones has consistently shown when available.

Liverpool, however, are unwilling to consider selling unless presented with a truly exceptional offer.

With Spurs currently lingering around the lower half of the Premier League table, the pressure is mounting on Thomas Frank to strengthen his squad before the transfer window shuts. As the battle for European places intensifies and injuries continue to mount, Tottenham know that adding midfield depth could be crucial to their hopes in the second half of the season.
