Alasdair Gold Reveals Fresh Update in Tottenham’s Chase for Andy Robertson

Tottenham’s possible signing of Liverpool defender Andy Robertson could go through for a modest fee if both clubs can agree on terms, journalist Alasdair Gold reports.
Spurs unexpectedly opened talks for the Scotland international on Friday, fast-tracking plans that had initially aimed for a free move in the summer. The sudden urgency came after Ben Davies suffered a broken ankle, leaving Tottenham in need of immediate cover.

Robertson’s contract at Anfield expires at the end of the season, and Liverpool have begun discussions about a potential early departure as the player seeks clarity on his future. With just six months left on his deal, Liverpool are unlikely to demand a high transfer fee.

Despite claims that Tottenham may have to pay a large sum to secure Robertson in January, Gold said on X that any fee agreed would be “far lower” than the reported figures. He also pointed out that Robertson will turn 32 in about six weeks, which further diminishes his value in the market.

Gold added that Spurs are looking to bring more experience and leadership into the squad, which is why they signed Conor Gallagher and are pursuing Robertson. The defender offers a winning mentality, having won two Premier League titles and the Champions League, among other major trophies. Tottenham want to strengthen the squad’s culture and pass that mindset on to younger players.

Both Gallagher and Robertson also count as homegrown players, helping to replace Ben Davies, whose contract ends this summer after 12 years at the club. Tottenham are still expected to sign at least one attacker, but there is a clear logic behind targeting Robertson, especially given Destiny Udogie’s ongoing availability issues.

Personal terms are reportedly already agreed, and negotiations between the clubs are continuing.
