Deal sealed: Liverpool announce January arrival of dynamic winger with 24 career goals

Liverpool Women have confirmed the January signing of SC Freiburg winger Aurélie Csillag.

The Swiss attacker becomes the latest addition to Gareth Taylor’s squad, joining Anna Josendal from Hammarby and Martha Thomas, who has arrived on loan from Tottenham. The Reds are currently propping up the Women’s Super League table, still searching for their first league win after collecting just four points from 12 matches.

Goals have been in short supply this season, with Liverpool managing only eight in the WSL — the second-lowest tally in the division, ahead of only Leicester City. The club will be hoping Csillag can provide a much-needed spark in the final third, with her arrival confirmed on the club’s official website on Monday.

Underlying data suggests she could add real attacking intent. Compared to her positional peers across Europe’s top leagues, Csillag ranks highly for non-penalty expected goals, shot volume, progressive carries and touches inside the opposition penalty area, highlighting her threat around goal.

Csillag spent the first half of the season with Freiburg, scoring three times and providing one assist in 13 Frauen-Bundesliga appearances — averaging a goal involvement roughly every 118 minutes. Before her move to Germany, she netted 16 goals in 49 matches across three seasons with FC Basel, taking her total club career tally to 24 goals when her time at Grasshopper is included.

The forward offers versatility, having stated she is comfortable playing either out wide or through the middle — welcome news for a Liverpool side struggling for attacking output.

“I come as a striker or a winger. I can score goals, take players on one-v-one and outrun my opponents. Those are my strengths,” Csillag said via Liverpool’s official website.
