Exclusive: Liverpool ace turns down Real Madrid and Bayern to reach preliminary new contract agreement

 

 

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai is reportedly close to agreeing a new contract at Anfield.

According to sources, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich had shown genuine interest in signing the Hungarian international, but he is now expected to commit his future to Liverpool. Although his current deal runs until 2028, meaning there was no immediate rush for a renewal, the club has been eager to ward off interest from other major European clubs.

It’s unclear how seriously Real or Bayern pursued him, but there was some level of interest, and Liverpool have always wanted to retain the player. Szoboszlai has been highly rated since his early days at Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig, and his progress has continued steadily since moving to Liverpool.

The 25-year-old played a key role in Arne Slot’s title-winning team last season, scoring eight goals, and he has contributed five goals and four assists in all competitions so far this season. According to FotMob, he is currently Liverpool’s second-best player statistically with a rating of 7.32.

It’s easy to see why clubs like Real and Bayern were interested, but letting Szoboszlai leave would have been a major mistake for Liverpool. While the club has sold top players such as Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho in the past, fans hope the team will now focus on building a competitive squad rather than cashing in on stars.

With Szoboszlai seemingly secured, attention may soon turn to other key players, including Ibrahima Konate, whose contract is set to expire this summer.
