Thomas Frank leads training amid mounting uncertainty over his future at Tottenham.

 

 

Thomas Frank supervised Tottenham’s training on Sunday, projecting a calm, business-as-usual approach ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund, despite growing uncertainty over his position.

The manager’s future remains in doubt following Spurs’ dramatic 2-1 home defeat to West Ham on Saturday, a result that prompted supporters to call for him to be “sacked in the morning.” The loss left Tottenham 14th in the Premier League and extended their poor run, having won only two of their last 13 league matches.

While Spurs are still alive in the Champions League with a realistic chance of reaching the knockout stages, the club anticipates a notably reduced attendance for the visit of Dortmund.

Ahead of the game, Tottenham appointed former Ajax manager John Heitinga to Frank’s backroom staff, replacing assistant Matt Wells, who left before Christmas to take over at Colorado Rapids. Heitinga led the Sunday session, with Frank overseeing as usual. The Dane emphasized that he had pushed for Heitinga’s hiring, despite speculation that the Dutch coach could serve as a caretaker if the board decides to make a managerial change.

The situation remains delicate. The board has been hesitant to dismiss Frank, recognizing that many challenges this season were beyond his control during what was always likely to be a transitional campaign.

Before the West Ham game, CEO Vinai Venkatesham issued an open letter to fans, urging patience and adopting a calm, reassuring tone. However, frustration boiled over when substitute Callum Wilson scored a stoppage-time winner, triggering sustained boos from the home crowd. Fans also expressed their displeasure when Frank substituted winger Mathys Tel, whom they wanted to remain on the pitch. The hostile reaction after Wilson’s goal left the board facing a critical decision regarding Frank’s future.
