Lionel Messi tipped for Premier League switch as Liverpool weigh up bold move

Liverpool have been unexpectedly linked with a potential move for Argentine icon Lionel Messi.

A report from Fichajes claims the Reds are considering a short-term loan for the South American star. Messi is currently with Inter Miami and is on a break due to the MLS calendar, sparking speculation that a temporary return to European football could suit him. Such a move would allow him to train at elite standards and compete at a higher intensity over the coming months.

Liverpool are said to be monitoring the situation closely, with the idea of a brief Premier League stint seen as mutually beneficial. However, it remains unclear whether the club will turn their interest into a formal offer.

From a footballing perspective, Messi’s arrival would be a huge boost for Liverpool. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time, his creativity and goal threat could provide a much-needed lift in what has been a challenging campaign for the Reds. In theory, his vision, ability to unlock defences and consistent end product would significantly enhance their attacking options.

While the prospect appears highly unlikely, it is an intriguing idea. Now 38, Messi enjoyed an outstanding 2024/25 season, scoring 43 goals and providing 26 assists. A short spell in the Premier League could appeal as a final elite challenge, especially given his past links with a move to England.

Meanwhile, Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has matched a remarkable ten-year record previously set by Messi, underlining the Argentine’s lasting influence on the modern game.
