Jurgen Klopp’s chances of taking over as Tottenham manager drop dramatically after the sacking is confirmed
Jurgen Klopp continues to be linked with a return to football management, despite previously making it clear that he has no intention of taking up another coaching role. The German enjoyed huge success at Liverpool and had earlier turned Borussia Dortmund into a major European force.
Recently, Klopp’s name has been floated as a potential option for Tottenham Hotspur, with current boss Thomas Frank under mounting pressure over his future. Frank is expected to remain in charge for the upcoming match against West Ham — a game that could be pivotal — but his position looks increasingly untenable if results fail to improve. Even so, any move to Spurs now appears extremely unlikely for Klopp, despite earlier, faint speculation.
Klopp linked with Real Madrid role
Klopp is currently working as Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer, overseeing the company’s football operations worldwide. Reports suggesting he may be unhappy in that role briefly reignited talk of a possible return to management, with Tottenham among the clubs mentioned. However, bookmakers have rapidly cooled those links, with Klopp’s odds of becoming Spurs manager lengthening from 6/1 to 12/1 in the space of a day.
That shift comes as Klopp is now being strongly tipped as a leading candidate to replace Xabi Alonso at Real Madrid, following the Spaniard’s surprise announcement that he is stepping down. Klopp is joint-favourite for the role alongside Roberto De Zerbi, with Ruben Amorim (10/1) and Enzo Maresca (8/1) also in the running.
Ironically, Alonso himself has now emerged as the new frontrunner for the Tottenham job, an appointment that many Spurs fans would warmly welcome.
Klopp downplays return to management
Asked this week about the possibility of returning to top-level management — including the Real Madrid vacancy — Klopp dismissed the speculation. Speaking to Austrian broadcaster Servus TV, he said:
> “This has nothing to do with me and doesn’t affect me at all. Coaching roles are always changing, and it’s fine to watch from the outside without worrying about what it might mean for you personally. Where I am right now is the right place for me.”
