Mixed signals surround Federico Chiesa as Juventus keep “constant contact” over potential move
Federico Chiesa’s future has been a major talking point throughout the January transfer window.
Nearly 18 months after arriving at Liverpool, the 28-year-old is still struggling to secure a regular place in Arne Slot’s starting XI, prompting strong links with a return to Italy – particularly to former club Juventus. Earlier this month, Fabrizio Romano reported that Juve had made “formal contact” to explore a move, though James Pearce later stated on X that Liverpool had received no such approach.
On Wednesday night, Tuttomercatoweb claimed the Bianconeri are “determined” to bring Chiesa back, maintaining “constant contact” with Liverpool, who are said to be “open” to selling. The report also suggested that Chiesa himself is “keen to return” to Turin.
That stance clashes with The Athletic’s Transfer DealSheet, which revealed on Tuesday that Liverpool are “highly unlikely” to approve an exit this month and have “no appetite” to sell unless a “significant permanent offer” arrives.
With mixed reports circulating, it’s difficult to pinpoint Chiesa’s exact situation. However, James Pearce’s track record makes his information the most reliable when it comes to Liverpool matters.
While Chiesa isn’t a regular starter under Slot, he has featured more often this season, already recording 50% more appearances than in the entirety of 2024/25, according to Transfermarkt.
Given Alexander Isak’s long-term injury and the uncertainty surrounding Mo Salah’s return from AFCON, Liverpool are in no position to let Chiesa leave unless he pushes hard for a move. That seems unlikely, considering his positive attitude behind the scenes despite limited minutes.
The responsibility now lies with the Italian to seize any opportunities he’s given – something he failed to do against Barnsley on Monday, where the match largely passed him by.
Ideally, Chiesa will remain at Anfield for the rest of the season and show Slot exactly why he deserves to stay.
