Liverpool Legends vs Dortmund: Charity Clash Grows Bigger Than Nostalgia
Liverpool’s yearly charity match is coming together, and the latest announcement suggests it will be much more than a simple reunion.
The club has confirmed five more former players for March’s Legends game at Anfield, according to the Liverpool FC Foundation. Sami Hyypiä is set to wear red again when Liverpool Legends face Borussia Dortmund Legends on Saturday, March 28, 2026, in aid of the club’s official charity.
The ex-centre-back featured 464 times over ten years at the club, scoring 35 goals and playing a key role in the historic 2005 Champions League triumph.
He will be joined by Fabio Aurélio, Grégory Vignal, Martin Kelly and Yossi Benayoun, all familiar faces from previous Legends matches.
More than a nostalgic occasion
As with previous editions, the match will raise funds for the LFC Foundation and Forever Reds, with proceeds supporting employability, education and mentoring initiatives. The aim is to help the Foundation reach its target of supporting 500,000 people each season by 2030.
Aurélio’s inclusion marks a return for Liverpool’s first Brazilian signing, while Vignal is still fondly recalled for his goal in the 2024 Legends clash against Ajax.
Kelly and Benayoun were also part of the team that beat Chelsea Legends at Stamford Bridge earlier this season, highlighting that this fixture is played competitively rather than symbolically.
They will line up alongside Jerzy Dudek, Pepe Reina and Sander Westerveld in goal, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm GMT at Anfield.
Klopp links add extra intrigue
A reunion between Liverpool and Dortmund naturally brings attention beyond the action on the pitch. The two clubs share a rich history, memorable European nights and one famous comeback, leading to speculation over whether Jürgen Klopp might make an appearance in some form.
