Fabrizio Romano reveals Marc Guehi’s true plan as Manchester City move to hijack Liverpool’s top target.

 

 

Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Liverpool are “really pushing” to sign Marc Guehi, but the race is far from straightforward.

The Reds are facing intense competition from Arsenal and, most notably, Manchester City, with several top clubs closely monitoring the England defender’s contract situation, which expires in the summer. Guehi’s long-standing plan has been to leave on a free transfer after the 2025/26 season.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained that the player’s intention has always been to move in the summer without a fee. Liverpool are pushing hard, Arsenal remain in contact due to Mikel Arteta’s admiration, Bayern Munich have held talks, and Manchester City are preparing a strong January move. City are ready to strike a deal with Crystal Palace immediately if Guehi gives the green light.

Despite City’s aggressive approach, the final decision rests with the player, who still prefers a free summer exit. However, Palace could be tempted to sell now if an offer in the region of £30–35 million arrives, according to Football Insider.

That fee could represent real value for Liverpool, giving Arne Slot’s side greater defensive stability for the second half of the season. Relying solely on a free transfer in summer carries serious risk, especially with growing interest from Europe’s elite.

Delaying all centre-back business until June could leave the Reds in a dangerous position. With Joe Gomez’s fitness uncertain, the need for a long-term Virgil van Dijk successor, and questions surrounding Giovanni Leoni’s return from injury, Liverpool may require up to three new centre-halves by 2026/27.

Putting that level of pressure on one transfer window could prove costly — and the longer Liverpool wait, the more rivals may enter the battle for Marc Guehi.
