Fabrizio Romano shares midday transfer update as formal approach made for Liverpool fan favourite
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that official talks have taken place over a possible January move involving a Liverpool player.
Federico Chiesa has struggled to secure regular minutes at Anfield this season, and back in November Romano suggested that Serie A sides could look to make a winter approach if his situation didn’t improve under Arne Slot. A fresh update from the transfer expert now indicates that those predictions may be coming true.
Just after 1pm on Monday, Romano shared new information on Liverpool’s No.14, with one of his former clubs emerging as a potential suitor for a return to Italy.
Posting on X, Romano wrote: “Juventus made formal contact to show interest in Federico Chiesa over a possible return in January. Juve want to add one more winger this month and Chiesa is appreciated. Decision up to Liverpool and the player — still early stages.”
Despite Chiesa’s strong popularity among Liverpool fans, that support hasn’t translated into opportunities under Slot. The Italian winger has been handed just two Premier League starts across his season and a half at the club.
Even with Liverpool’s attacking options stretched due to injuries to Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, as well as Mohamed Salah’s absence at the Africa Cup of Nations, Slot has largely kept Chiesa on the sidelines, aside from a lone start against Wolves shortly after Christmas.
While the 28-year-old failed to make an impact in that match — not managing a single shot against the league’s bottom side — Liverpool are in no position to allow him to depart midway through the season.
The Reds’ forward depth is already under strain, and although some absentees are expected to return soon, losing Chiesa without securing a replacement would further weaken the squad.
A move away from Anfield in 2026 remains a realistic possibility, but ideally not in January — even if Chiesa would be justified in seeking a transfer to a club where regular playing time is more likely.
