Liverpool reach ‘final call’ on Arne Slot exit following Fulham stalemate
Liverpool are reportedly poised to dismiss Arne Slot this week following yet another underwhelming Premier League outing, this time against Fulham on Sunday.
The Reds recovered from an early setback to take a 2–1 lead at Craven Cottage, only for Harrison Reed to fire home a stunning long-range equaliser deep into stoppage time. Liverpool had believed they had sealed the win moments earlier when Cody Gakpo struck in the fourth minute of second-half added time, making the late blow even more painful.
It was another exasperating afternoon for Slot’s side, whose performances have increasingly lacked fluency and cutting edge. James Pearce of The Athletic has suggested Liverpool’s biggest issue is an ongoing identity crisis, pointing to a noticeable absence of spark and creativity.
Despite sitting fourth in the Premier League — a position that would still secure Champions League football — Liverpool are a worrying 14 points behind leaders Arsenal and only seven points clear of 14th-placed Crystal Palace. The draw at Fulham means Slot has now overseen just 10 league victories from 20 matches this season.
Spanish outlet Fichajes claims Liverpool have already made their decision, insisting the club is set to part ways with the Dutchman, who “will not continue as Liverpool manager beyond this week.” The report states the board is preparing for his exit after a campaign that has fallen well short of expectations.
According to the report, Liverpool’s hierarchy expects not just results but a bold, competitive approach every matchday. The sizeable gap to Arsenal has reportedly been the decisive factor, with the board viewing it as unacceptable given the heavy investment made during the summer.
The same report adds that Slot’s departure would immediately trigger Liverpool’s succession plans, with potential replacements already under consideration. The aim is to quickly restore competitiveness and prevent the season from spiralling further, with any incoming manager facing instant pressure and little time to settle.
Reflecting on the Fulham draw, Slot admitted his frustration, saying too many points have slipped away and that the team must improve its ability to see out games late on.
Former striker Gary Lineker, speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, interpreted Slot’s comments as an admission that Liverpool are simply not performing at a level that guarantees wins, as they did last season. Alan Shearer agreed, bluntly stating that Liverpool are nowhere near the standard they set last year and are now paying the price for it.
