Liverpool’s push for a top-four place in the 2025/26 Premier League suffered another setback on Sunday as a dramatic late equaliser denied them victory at Craven Cottage — and Arne Slot’s reaction afterwards only fuelled frustration among supporters.
With seconds remaining, Harrison Reed unleashed a stunning long-range effort that flew into the top-right corner, sealing a 2-2 draw and leaving the reigning champions ruing another missed opportunity. Earlier, former Liverpool winger Harry Wilson had put Fulham ahead after exploiting a badly timed offside trap.
That lead stood until the hour mark, when Florian Wirtz’s equaliser was controversially allowed to stand. Deep into stoppage time, Cody Gakpo appeared to have snatched a vital winner, only for Reed’s spectacular strike to have the final say. Slot’s post-match comments, delivered in visible frustration, were not well received by the Anfield faithful.
Liverpool 2-2 Fulham: Slot Under Fire After Full-Time Verdict
Slot etched his name into Premier League history last season, becoming just the fifth manager — alongside the likes of José Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti — to lift the title in his debut campaign, guiding Liverpool to glory with four games to spare in 2024/25. This season, however, has been a very different story.
Despite spending over £400 million in the summer on marquee signings such as Alexander Isak and Wirtz, the former Feyenoord boss has struggled to turn heavy investment into consistent results. The performance against Fulham was another example of that disconnect.
While conceding late is always painful — particularly given Liverpool’s ongoing issues when falling behind away from home — Slot suggested his side were unfortunate and deserved all three points, implying they were clearly superior. Speaking after the match, he said:
“We were one incredible strike away from a good result. It was unlucky to go in at half-time 1-0 down because that was the only chance we conceded. It’s not like we created loads either, but before the goal, we had the same number of chances as them.
“When you score twice away from home and hardly give anything away, you expect to win. We don’t concede many chances, but we keep conceding incredible goals. We want to do more with the possession we have. Given the players available, it was a decent performance. We were close, but we threw it away at the end.”
Statistically, Liverpool enjoyed 58% possession compared to Fulham’s 42% and edged several key metrics, but the numbers do not tell the whole story.
Marco Silva’s side created plenty of opportunities of their own — eight shots to Liverpool’s ten — and could easily have taken more than a point. Although Alexis Mac Allister struck the crossbar with a close-range header, his recent performances have begun to concern supporters. As such, Slot’s suggestion that Liverpool were vastly superior did not sit well with many watching.
Fans Hit Back at Slot’s Comments
While Liverpool are known for showing patience with their managers, Slot’s remarks triggered a fierce reaction from sections of the fanbase. One supporter described his comments as “next level delusion,” adding that the response was entirely predictable.
Another wrote: “I can’t believe this is a Liverpool manager,” perhaps reflecting fondly on the era of Jürgen Klopp, who delivered both Premier League and Champions League titles at Anfield.
Others were even more direct. “He sounds like he’s managing Fulham, not Liverpool,” one fan complained, while another said: “‘Unlucky’, yet he admits we created the same number of chances as Fulham — sack him today.”
One final response summed up the mood: “Excuse after excuse after excuse. This is unbelievable.”
